Technical accuracy (dates, locations) can sometimes squish the creative imagnination.

On planet wendy technical accuracy has been recast as story quality (xref Pirsig) felt through immersion in belief.

I watched a little of The Beautiful People but had to switch off after cringing into a ball in laughter when they referenced The Oracle as a place where (if I recall) Olivia Colman's character had been as a teenager.

The Oracle shopping centre was opened in late 1999, way too late for even the updated time period. It was just about going up in 1997, though it was referenced as a planned development in my business studies lessons in 1993 or '94. I suppose the character could have been hanging around at the bus depot instead, or the Yield Hall car park! A more likely reference would have been the Butts Centre - now officially labelled the Broad Street Mall (a name it got in the early 90s, as I recall), but many long-term residents still use the old name.

Actually the book was set, I believe, in the 60s. The TV series "updated" this to the 1990s for no apparent reason and created a role for Meera Syal for equally little apparent reason. I have to say though, as a proud Reading resident I did sit in front of the tube to watch "The Beautiful People" and it was truly, truly awful

I believe the book 'the beautiful people' was originally set in 1970's Reading, and my haircut is 1970's retro. Reading clearly had some form of 1970's renniasance that is mysteriously prompting my hairstyling impulses.

Wikipedia appears to find 'the beautiful people' slightly above the piss-poor Mr. London St. benchmark: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beautiful_People_(UK_TV_series)

No episode on 'how I got my haircut', maybe that's in the scheduled series 2.

It will probably be like that pisspoor recent comedy "The Beautiful People" - ostensibly set in Reading but clearly filmed nowhere near it.
