In the foyer of Reading’s downtown  homebase an Owl collects donations for a rescue and sanctuary.   Big, beautiful, fluffy owl with efficient looking talons.   The handler talks about giving young criminals lessons in how to look after owls.   How this  skill and responsibility enables them to develop self esteem and respect for others

    Excellent.

    Unfortunately, our local injured bird sanctuary has been shut down by the council because it decided it needed a zoo licence. The fact the sanctuary’s been going since before the Zoo Act came into force thirty years ago is neither here nor there, suddenly it’s a requirement. Sigh…

    Such a good idea that I am going to have to get down to Homebase and see it for myself, despite the fact I’m a B&Q girl myself. Sad about Kevin’s bird sanctuary though, how unneccessary.

    I suspect these guys are not a zoo, they are independent traders touting for business. Hence they avoid the zoo act requirements. Wonder why the Rochdale sanctury decided not to either upgrade to conform with being a zoo or remove the visiting day to cease being classified as a zoo.

    Money, sadly: it costs a lot to comply with the licence, especially for a small charity, and no visiting day, no income.
