Being there: GOLD highlight
The pinacle gold highlight position for our teams’ recent Snowdonia hiking goes to:
Gold winner: being there
Being completely there, watching where I place my foot, thinking about my balance, taking a deep breath of damp unpolluted air. My mind so totally wrapped up in the here and now that nothing bursts in. The details of work, home ownership, family membership are temporarily lost behind being on a mountain.
Even when I take a break from walking to soak-up the view I am still totally immersed in being on that mountain. The feeling is exquisit and rare. For me it compares to some unpublishable experiences and:
- racing a Laser in a force 4 gale
- climbing the technical move on a severe rated climb (highest grade that I managed).
- excellent sex
This experience achieved ‘4 Smiles’
on the Wendy House rating scale - Ratings explained
This highlight alone more than cancels out all the nastiness of the 3 winning downsides:
- Gold: Spongy bog
- Silver: Swarming midges
- Bronze: Scree scrambling

Hey Wendy! This is s great expression of the moment, tho I’d have to say being on the side of a mountain with my vertigo does not appeal personally. I look forward to more. By the way, how do we rate these things? Or are the smileys your own review? Indigo x

Hi Indigo – the Wendy House rating scale is indeed my own rating of the experience – with an explanatory link. Commenters can use these open text boxes to provide feedback on the scribbles in whatever way they want. I haven’t provided a pre-structured scale for them, do you think I should? It does seem like a good idea, thanks Indigo, I’ll have a snoop around for a rating scale ‘plug-in’…

Love the feeling you describe here – it’s so rare that it’s difficult to explain.

Scarlet
It’s a good memory to have so fresh in mind this week – I’ve been imagining myself there quite a lot….
